Ruby

Ruby is the beautiful red birthstone for the month of July. The word ruby comes from the Latin word ruber, which means red. The most desired color for ruby is deep pure vibrant red. Large, fine rubies are extremely rare and in some cases rarer than diamonds. Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. It measures 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Only diamond is harder making ruby an excellent gemstone for any type jewelry. Rubies can be found in Afghanistan, Kenya, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam. India is thought of as the country of ruby's origin. There it was treasured as a stone for protection, from misfortune and bad health. It makes a great gift for any occasion as the color red is most associated with love.
